Lyceum, PWU eye WNCAA finals seats

Lyceum and Philippine Women's University eye finals seats while the rest of the field seeks to establish their semifinal standings when the 41st WNCAA senior basketball and volleyball elimination round ends today in separate venues.

Ten-time volleyball champion Lyceum and Rizal Technological University clash at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Scholastica gym, the winner advancing outright to the Senior A best-of-three finals. The loser next takes on fifth-ranked Miriam while the Nos. 3 and 4 squads collide, with the victors duels disputing the other championship seat.

PWU clinched the first Senior B finals seat last week with a four-game elimination sweep of the tournament being supported by official media partner Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mikasa, Molten, Sonak Sports Trading, official print partner Manila Bulletin, Lenovo, Solar Sports, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Taichi, Mojo, CEMG, Goody and MJC Press.

In basketball, four-time champion Lyceum goes for a sweep of Senior A and the top semifinal ranking against winless La Consolacion College Manila (0-4) in the 8 a.m. opener at the Lyceum gym. RTU and University of Asia and the Pacific contest the fourth and last Final Four berth at 2 p.m.

PWU targets a second championship appearance when it tests the mettle of Miriam in their Senior B game at 3:30 p.m.

Tournament format for a five-team Seniors group awards the first finals seat to the No. 1 rank team. For divisions with six teams or more, the No. 1 vs No. 4 and No. 2 vs No. 3 format will be used.

At the CEU gym, RTU goes for a 3-0 mark against winless UA&P in the 10 a.m. opener of senior futsal while defending champion PWU will target a second win when it faces Emilio Aguinaldo College Manila at 11 a.m.

Defending junior champion De La Salle Zobel tries to join idle San Beda College Alabang on top at 2-0 with a win against Miriam at 2 p.m. (END) 04 Sept 2010
